In our society 5-10% of couples have varying degrees of infertility. The causes vary and treatments offered can be simple or more complex. Thus the success rates vary significantly depending on the individual couple’s problems. We certainly offer hope and possible success of pregnancy with an IVF cycle tailored to your need.
The reality unfortunately is that many of these techniques may require multiple attempts. This alone can be difficult for a couple to cope with. An important factor of our clinic is the availability of counselling and support during these emotional times - giving each individual assessment as required. The information our web site endeavours to give an insight into our IVF facilities and hopefully a better understanding of the management of infertility. Please feel free to discuss any queries you may have with our Nurse Coordinator.
We wish you all hope and success of parenthood.

Normal conception

In a couple with normal fertility, intercourse at the time of ovulation results in a pregnancy rate of approximately 16%. This is the best nature can do and all reproductive technology pregnancy rates need to be assessed with this figure in mind. We are therefore not a highly fertile species. Conception occurs following intercourse at the time of ovulation. Sperm tracks through the cervical mucous, the uterus and into the fallopian tube where the oocyte (egg) is situated. It is released from the ovary at the time of ovulation and is swept up by the end of the fallopian tube and drawn into it. A sperm penetrates the egg and fertilisation occurs with a mixture of male and female chromosomes. A cell is formed which then divides to form a multi-cell structure called an embryo. This remains in the tube for 4 days and then enters the uterus where it implants into the lining. Approximately 85% of pregnancies then continue normally and approximately 15% of pregnancies will miscarry due to some genetic defect within the embryo. Conception in normally fertile couples can be enhanced by a healthy life style and inhibited by cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and drug ingestion. The younger a couple, the more fertile they will be and the older, (the woman especially) the less fertile.
